Instructor

Rob Clare was first an actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company, then a Staff Director at the UK National Theatre. He was subsequently awarded an Oxford University doctorate, and is now an internationally recognized specialist who has taught and/or directed Shakespeare in Ireland, Austria, Germany, Australia and China, as well as the US and his native UK. In India, he directed Hindi productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet. He worked regularly for almost a decade as a freelance verse and text coach with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and founded and led the Classical Acting program at London’s prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama. Since moving to the US he has worked with Chicago’s acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and his teaching credits include UCLA, The Juilliard School, Yale, USC Los Angeles, CSU Long Beach, CSU Los Angeles, and NYU Tisch (both graduate and undergraduate acting). As well as leading successive series of his own Shakespeare workshops on both coasts, he also led workshops on a regular basis for The Actors Center (NYC), the Berg Studios (LA), and The Academy of Classical Acting (DC). Directing credits here in the US include Cymbeline, Twelfth Night, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, All’s Well That Ends Well, The Tempest, King Lear, The Winter’s Tale, As You Like It, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, The Duchess of Malfi, Love’s Labour’s Lost, and (most recently) Troilus and Cressida. He is planning a production of King Lear to tour to underserved communities in and around Los Angeles. He is married to the actress Reiko Aylesworth. They live in Pasadena with their son, Andre.
